Spousal Sponsorship Document Checklist: What IRCC Requires

The complete document list for sponsoring a spouse or partner to Canada, plus the relationship evidence that makes or breaks your application.

Spousal sponsorship is one of the most paperwork-intensive Canadian immigration applications. IRCC scrutinizes relationships carefully to detect marriages of convenience, so the documents you provide must tell a convincing, consistent story. This checklist covers every required document plus the relationship evidence that makes a strong application.

Important:

This checklist is for guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Spousal sponsorship is complex and individual situations vary. Consider consulting a licensed RCIC or immigration lawyer for case-specific advice.

Eligibility at a glance

To sponsor a spouse or common-law partner, the sponsor must be:

  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • At least 18 years old
  • Living in Canada (with some exceptions for citizens living abroad)
  • Able to meet basic financial needs (though no specific income requirement for spousal)
  • Not in default on previous sponsorship undertakings
  • Not receiving social assistance except for disability

Mandatory IRCC forms

Sponsor forms

  • IMM 1344 - Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking
  • IMM 5540 - Sponsor Evaluation
  • IMM 5532 - Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation Questionnaire
  • IMM 5476 - Use of Representative (if using an RCIC or lawyer)
  • Sponsor Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union IMM 5409 (if common-law partner)

Sponsored person forms

  • IMM 0008 - Generic Application Form for Canada
  • IMM 5406 - Additional Family Information
  • IMM 5669 - Schedule A Background / Declaration
  • IMM 5562 - Supplementary Information (Your Travels)
  • IMM 5490 - Sponsored Spouse or Conjugal Partner Questionnaire

Proof of relationship

This is the most important section of your application. IRCC is looking for evidence that your relationship is genuine. Include as much as reasonably possible.

Marriage certificate (for spouses)

  • Official marriage certificate from the issuing authority
  • Translated to English or French if in another language
  • Notarized translation required if not originally in English or French

Evidence of cohabitation (for common-law)

  • Must prove 12 consecutive months of cohabitation
  • Joint lease or mortgage documents
  • Shared utility bills
  • Joint bank accounts
  • Shared insurance policies
  • Government-issued documents showing same address

Photos of your relationship

  • Photos spanning the duration of your relationship
  • Include photos with family members
  • Include photos at events like weddings, vacations, holidays
  • Label each photo with who is in it, when it was taken, and where
  • Aim for 15-30 photos showing different times and contexts

Communication history

  • Screenshots of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage chats
  • Email threads showing ongoing communication
  • Call logs from phone bills
  • Covering the entire relationship, not just recent
  • Include dates visible in screenshots

Financial intermingling

  • Joint bank account statements
  • Credit card authorized user documentation
  • Shared loans or mortgages
  • Money transfers between you
  • Beneficiary designations naming your spouse

Travel history together

  • Passport stamps showing trips together
  • Airline tickets or e-boarding passes with both names
  • Hotel reservations
  • Photos from trips with visible dates
Warning:

Thin relationship evidence is the most common reason spousal sponsorship applications are refused. IRCC officers want to see a pattern of genuine relationship across time, not just a recent burst of evidence manufactured for the application.

Identity and status documents

For the sponsor

  • Canadian passport OR permanent resident card
  • Certificate of Canadian citizenship (if citizen by descent)
  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) if PR
  • Birth certificate

For the sponsored person

  • Valid passport (biographic page)
  • Birth certificate
  • National ID card (if applicable)
  • Previous marriage dissolution documents (divorce decree, annulment, death certificate)

Financial documents (sponsor)

While spousal sponsorship has no specific LICO income requirement, IRCC still wants to see you can support your partner. Include:

  • CRA Notice of Assessment for the past 3 years
  • Employment letter stating position, salary, and start date
  • Recent pay stubs (last 3)
  • Option C Printout from CRA
  • If self-employed: business registration plus tax returns

Supporting documents for the sponsored person

  • Police certificates from each country lived in for 6+ months since age 18
  • Medical exam (upfront recommended)
  • Biometrics (after submission)
  • Travel history in detail for the past 10 years
  • List of jobs and addresses for past 10 years
  • Evidence of current status in their country of residence

If you have children together

  • Birth certificates showing both parents
  • Custody agreements if applicable
  • Photos of both parents with children
  • Documents showing joint parenting responsibility

Common reasons spousal sponsorship applications fail

Insufficient relationship evidence

The most common refusal reason. Applications with only a marriage certificate and a few photos raise red flags. You need a thorough, multi-dimensional picture of your relationship.

Inconsistencies between forms

If your answers differ between forms (e.g., different start dates of the relationship, inconsistent addresses, conflicting travel history), IRCC will question the entire application. Cross-check everything.

Missing supporting documents

IRCC will not chase you for missing standard documents. Missing a police certificate, divorce decree, or medical exam can cause return or refusal.

Suspicious relationship timeline

Very short relationships before marriage, long gaps between meeting and marrying, or marriages shortly after one partner's refused visa raise scrutiny. Provide extra evidence if your situation is unusual.

Sponsor ineligible

If the sponsor has outstanding sponsorship undertakings, is on social assistance, or has recent criminal history, they may be ineligible. Verify sponsor eligibility before applying.
